Election Central 2016
Students celebrate the electoral process, witness historic election
More than 1,000 University of Delaware students celebrated at the CPC’s third quadrennial election-night event on November 8, 2016. Attendees participated in election-themed games and trivia while enjoying popcorn, cookies and UDairy ice cream. They listened to analysis by expert panelists, who discussed polling; battleground/swing states; race, religion and gender; and media coverage and campaign and free speech. Guests tracked election returns on large screens around the room that aired coverage by both major news outlets and the University of Delaware’s own Student Television Network (STN). STN, which was live on the scene to cover the event and interview faculty experts and attendees, also aired its coverage on UD’s channel 49 and the CPC’s Facebook page. WVUD 91.3 FM broadcasted live and The Review reporters covered UD’s reaction to the historic election. Students got selfies with the ferocious and proud YoUDee, the official mascot of the University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens.
Vice President Biden and Baby Blue: “Please vote!”
Many Election Central attendees sported new shirts at the event, thanks to the CPC’s Halloween T-shirt giveaway. Congratulations to undergrad Rachael Russell for winning the Election Central 2016 T-shirt slogan contest. Her slogan, “Voting: Like not voting … But Better,” encourages all to take advantage of their right to vote.
Students and staff from the Center for Political Communication distributed the free T-shirts at Trabant Student Center Food Court on October 31. Thanks to these sponsors for making the giveaway possible: 91.3 WVUD: The Voice of the University of Delaware, STN 49, The Review, UD’s Office of Communications & Marketing, and University Student Centers.
