Andy Stern (AS ’70) is a member of the Center for Political Communication Advisory Council. Stern earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and international relations from the University of Delaware. From 1975 to 1977, he served as staff assistant to President Gerald R. Ford at the White House and then held senior corporate positions until he founded Sunwest Communications, a public relations and communications firm, in 1982.
Stern is a board member of San Diego-based AMN Healthcare, the nation’s largest healthcare staffing company; Medical City Dallas Hospital, where he is a past chairman; and has served as chairman of the Texas Healthcare Trustees. He is currently serving as
a member of the American Hospital Association’s Committee on Governance.
Active in community affairs, he was the first public relations agency executive to become a member of the Dallas Citizens Council. Additionally, he is a member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, Dallas Assembly, Leadership Dallas Alumni, and Public Relations Society of America. He was founding chairman of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center and chaired the Sixth Floor Museum, North Dallas Chamber, and Salesmanship Club Charitable Golf.
Stern was instrumental in efforts to maintain, refurbish and update the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, which commemorates the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. He also helped establish the George W. Bush Institute on the campus of
Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
While attending the University of Delaware, Stern was active in student government and was editor-in-chief of The Review, the student-managed newspaper. In 1993, he was the speaker for UD’s Winter Commencement. He received UD’s College of Arts & Sciences Alumni
Achievement Award in May 2016.
Stern and his wife, Sabina (AS ’71), are long-time supporters of the University of Delaware, regularly returning to their native Delaware from their Texas home. They have two married sons and four grandchildren.
